A for Austria
I'd asked the man this question a few months ago - if there is one country in the world that you'd definitely want to visit, which one would that be. Without missing a beat, he said Austria. The home of Mozart and the home of apple strudel (I know I am mentioning music and food in the same sentence but isn't that what life is all about :D ) I am a mountain person. It's not that I don't like the beaches - I love them too but given a choice, I'd pick a mountain resort for a holiday than a beach resort.
The other reason why I love Austria (not technically Austria then, but it is now) is the state of Salzburg. If you've seen the movie "The sound of music" (I have, a million times over), you'd be bowled over by the beauty of this place. And I was secretly happy that the man said Austria because I really do want go to Austria, especially after watching the movie. I want to visit the abbey (if it still exists) where Maria was a novice and breathe in the scent of Alps.
What are the must see places in Austria? Have you been here? Any insights into tiny cafes, offbeat places? Do leave your comments on this blog.
"The hills are alive with the sound of music
with songs they have sung for a thousand years...."
Wishlist: Australia

DeleteGood start to A to Z. Austria has been on my list forever. I was half-tempted to make a dash to Austria when we visited Germany. But decided Austria needs to be visited for itself and not combined with other destinations.
ReplyDeleteThanks Vinitha. Yeah it needs its space and time
DeleteAt first, I thought it said Australia and I was wondering why would you want to go there? Everything is trying to kill you! LOL I bet Austria would be a great place to visit. I'd love to go to Europe and hop around the countries.

DeleteAustria is beautiful any time of the year - sun you can go hiking up the mountains, winter you can come skiing down them! :) I would recommend looking into a place called Zell um Zee if, and when you go to Austria for a taste of the authentic way of life! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks. I will keep this in mind :) And you've got a lovely blog.

ReplyDeleteHi! Nice post! We are planning to visit Austria this summer... and this made me smile :-) Lets hope the vacation does happen!
ReplyDeleteOh All the best. I hope your vacation happens! Good luck.
DeleteMy husband and I are beach lovers. But Austria completely blew us away - that too after just visiting one state - Tyrol. Innsbruck is heavenly, as is Wattens. Visit Old town in Innsbruck by night. It is lovely - street music, pop up cafes et al. I am so in love with the place, I plan to blog about Innsbruck for the letter I this challenge!
ReplyDeleteOohh Aarthi. Lovely. I shall keep an eye out for your blog posts. :)
DeleteYour post caught my attention because last year on the A to Z Challenge I wrote about all the countries outside of the U.S. where I've traveled. Where you want to go is another great theme!

Thanks Marie. You have a lovely blog too
DeleteGreat start to the A to Z Challenge! I was actually torn between Austria and my chosen #DreamDestination of 'Argentina' because there is so much about Austria that I would love to experience. Heading up into the mountains sounds awesome but also exploring places like Vienna and Innsbruck would be really interesting.

Lots of people told me about Innsbruck - here in the comments too. I just read your blog and you make me want to visit Argentina as well. Sigh. :)
DeleteThe Sound of Music tour part of Salzburg is a total tourist trap, but kind of fun. The city and surroundings are beautiful. I was there many years ago as a college student.

Thanks for the heads up. I now know to not expect too much there. Thanks for stopping by :)
DeleteI was inspired to visit Austria too and all because of 'Sound of Music' :) I haven't been there yet but I plan to. my A to Z challenge theme is a retrospection of all the travel destinations I've been to but haven't written about. Drifting Traveller

Thank you Hanna. I stopped by both your blogs. They are lovely. I especially loved the mountains.
DeleteEven if we only travel through movies and song and food, it still gives us a wonderful sense of having visited someplace. Good luck in the challenge!
ReplyDeleteThanks Coral. Yes and there are some places that look exactly like they are in movies or the books. :) Cheers
DeleteWow.I am a mountain person as well but live by the beach. Life and it's little ironies. Now, 'the man' got me interested, here (winks). Wondering.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, Austria is always Maria and the Vontrapp family. Edelweiss, Edelweiss . . .
Joy always,
Susan
Yeah, Austria... is one of the places to visit, seen the Sound of Music more times than I can remember, and falling for Captain Von Trapp every single time.... sigh.
